After graduating Cum Laude with a degree in Engineering (light current) Gary designed payphone systems for Telephone Manufacturer South Africa where he developed his skills in low power and audio technology.
In addition to designing payphones, Gary volunteered to design automation in order to improve production yield and delivery schedules. This opportunity developed his skills in software engineering as well as developing his appreciation for designing for manufacturability and test as part of responsible R&D.
In CSR (UK) Gary developed his skills in RF technology developing solutions for mobile and automotive markets using Bluetooth and Wi-Fi technology.
The broad background in technology was a key factor in delivering successes whilst working with marketing and sales within CSR. Gary became known as a subject expert in systems engineering and a key contributor to the marketing strategy for penetrating the mobile phone industry.
Gary's ability for creative thinking brought him to the attention of start-up founders in South Africa where he was employed as Director of Engineering. Gary's engagement with customers, investors and responsibilities as director developed his acumen for business.
Several years later Gary joined another start-up, CSR (UK), where he successfully drove the company's new single-chip Bluetooth technology into mobile phone manufacturers including Nokia, RIM and Samsung. This achievement was accomplished despite the challenge of competing against incumbent suppliers, doing so by demonstrating resilience in delivering resolutions to integration issues quicker than the competition.
After completing his MBA, Gary worked with CSR's CFO office to establish a headquarter for Asia making use of tax incentives in Singapore. He was responsible for establishing the engineering, marketing, sales and financial functions in the region.
When CSR was acquired by Qualcomm, Gary returned to the UK and created a new department for the Voice and Music business, metamorphosizing the development flow and improving time to market for delivery of hardware and software products by a factor of twelve.
Gary has developed a reputation for thought leadership publishing several white papers on Bluetooth and Wi-Fi adoption into mobile phones and delivering many key note addresses at conferences for CSR as an expert in this area.
His most notable leadership roles are the creation of teams in the UK and Singapore, and the acquisition of teams in China, Taiwan, Korea, USA, Denmark and India supporting several business lines.
Gary is a firm believer in the development of self and has engaged with a doctoral thesis in organisational psychology to enhance his understanding of how to create environments to develop employees' entrepreneurial spirit within the organisation (intrapreneurship). Gary has used these skills to lead teams globally, evangelising and stimulating innovative ideas amongst teams from all backgrounds. This capability has resulted in many team successes including the adoption of CSR's Bluetooth and Wi-Fi solutions into various mobile and automative platforms for CSR, and significant organisational and technology improvements within Qualcomm's Voice and Music business.
